Interview SXUMS

"I have no friends"

Hailing from the industrial depths of Wollongong and now entrenched in the vibrant pulse of Sydney’s creative underground, SXUMS
emerges as a
force in the realm of chaotic glitch music.
Drawing inspiration from the classic witch house artists, SXUMS was
sparked by the collision of raw energy and ethereal sounds, igniting a
passion for creating visual dissonance
Playing Previous venues classic Sydney venues such as Moshpit and Low 302,

They have spoken to me about new music they are working on and a album fresh of the press 2D hell

First Question: It’s been quite a journey to hear your artistic growth over the last two years. From your 2 albums to all your singles, often contrasting genres, to your more recent productions that drift towards glitch and rave sound. When did you start making music and what inspired you to start?

I started at around 14-15 and mostly did it because I didn’t have any friends and the other kids made music, they had friends, but I was too far behind to really keep up with them on a technical music level as I went to a performing arts high school, everyone was kind of child prodigy, and I was just local.

 Do you play any instruments?
As soon as I got into producing, I got into piano, enough to see me through as well. Later in life, I have been getting into folk music and trying my best at bluegrass-style instruments like the fiddle. Also always trying to work on my voice, but that always feels like a losing battle

What’s your creative process? Does the melody come first and you build the track around it? Or do you start with drums and then build on that?

I usually start with a chord progression or melody, just because I have no real explanation for it, and I will take any advice anyone has.

How do you find new music these days?

Big listener to FBI radio, and I try to have a few mixes on the go from artists I like on the go, most artists seem to at least get that a lot people get their music that way, ive tried to give back and make a mix of my own of some of the songs I think other people should know about.

You live in Sydney, tell me more about the place you’re from and the music scene there. Are there many people who make similar stuff to you?

There is a few really good groups out there of electronic musicians, a venue called thinklazy runs a chip tune open mic ,great place to actually hear your tracks out loud and think shit that needs changes

What's the most recent venue where you played live?

Most recent was at moshpit for inharmonicity with π”°π”’π”žπ”«π”ž π”‘π”²π”Ÿπ”₯ and Paris lights , great show with a great turn out
Great venue that you can find the best music, If any one from Sydney will read/listen to this its pretty much the new valve bar ….. they’ll know what that means

Any shout-outs?
Of cause
Moshpit
Paris lights
Seanau
Lili allaska
And they probably don’t need the shoutout but to the band HEALTH, huge inspiration,

What are your plans for the future?

More gigs, and hopefully some raves, seems as if festivals might not be as big anymore  for what ever 1 of a billion reason so keeping it underground seems the way to go
